The road of the chapels
Historic site and monumentPresentation
Discover the six chapels of Manigod during a hiking or a car-trip.
Manigod is a vast valley made up of hamlets. Each of these hamlets has its own chapels and bread ovens. The chapels date from the Baroque period, specifically the rural Baroque style. They were all built thanks to donations from local people.
They served as places of protection: protection against famine, protection of the inhabitants, the harvests and against natural disasters; but also for specific requests such as good weather or rain.
The Chapel Trail is a project proposed by the local communities of the valley, together with Manigod Town Hall, offering you a unique route for a heritage and historical exploration of each of the six chapels in the area.
The chapels in question are:
Villard-Dessous, Montpellaz, Plan des Berthats, Joux, Tournance and La Charmette.
For each chapel, an outdoor information panel explaining its history is available to visitors.
This Chapel Trail, which is designed to be explored by car, can also be enjoyed on foot thanks to a footpath linking the chapels of Joux, Tournance and La Charmette.
Guided tours are also organised by the Thônes Guides’ Office.
A free accompanying brochure is available at the Manigod Tourist Office, as well as at the Merdassier tourist information point.
