Good practice in ski touring

Ski touring, unlike alpine skiing, takes place in virgin terrain that is more subject to weather fluctuations, particularly the risk of avalanches. It is therefore essential to find out about the weather before setting off. In addition to the weather conditions, don't hesitate to look for information on risk areas, altitude differences or simply follow the routes.
If you are a beginner, for your first outings, it is best to be accompanied by an experienced person who will be able to show you the right way to behave.

Essential equipment

In the event of an accident, it is imperative that you are able to get to safety and perform first aid. To do this, 3 pieces of equipment are highly recommended: the Avalanche Victim Detector (AVD), the probe and the shovel.

- The avalanche victim detector. This instrument emits or receives a signal that allows you to locate one or more people buried under the snow. In search mode, the dial indicates distance and direction.
Choose a new digital one (more efficient than the old analogue ones) and change the batteries to less than 80% to be sure it will work in the cold.

- The probe. Once the victim has been more or less located thanks to the avalanche transceiver, this pole allows you to define more precisely where the victim is.

- The shovel. This is useful for clearing snow and thus rescuing potential victims.
Good to know: it is necessary to dig horizontally to succeed in gently sliding the person out of the hole and not to pull him upwards. This can in some cases aggravate the injuries.

Although not compulsory, we also recommend that you have a small first aid kit (plasters, bandages, compresses, scissors, tweezers, gloves, etc.) as well as a helmet, a headlamp and a mobile phone.
